The boy's second elk

By Jake

December 4, 2013

It'd been a tough hunting season, and with only 2 days left in the general season, we were hunting hard. We were in an area of crunchy old snow, and we'd missed a large herd of elk by about a week. No fresh sign whatsoever. We decided to break camp and move. We headed to more sagebrushy area with mixed aspen and pockets of timber. We hiked toward an area we knew held elk off and on as they moved between protected areas. As we approached the area we stopped and glassed. Suddenly we heard crashing below us in an aspen stand. Jake exclaimed "elk!" We dropped and put our scopes on them. They were moving away, but not severely spooked. In the district we were in I could only shoot a branch antler bull, but Jake could shoot either sex elk. I looked hard for antlers, but they were all cows and calves. I noticed one cow in particular was very big, and she stopped. I told Jake to drop her, and he did. He fired twice, and she nose-dived into the ground - dead. The .308 150gr Superformance rounds were more than adequate, one shot passed right through, destroying lungs as it did. Once again, I'm one proud dad!
