Opening Day Fun

By Scott Haas

December 5, 2012

It was opening day firearms in Central Illinois and I had been watching a fork horn chase a doe for over an hour. They both went down into the ravine behind me and were out of sight. A half hour later the doe reappeared about 50 yards in front of me. She made her way to my right until she was about 15 yards away. She looked back to where she had come up the hill and I also looked to see a really nice buck coming up the hill. He stopped 70 yards and dropped with one shot from a Hornady SST 12 gauge slug from my Mossberg 500. The buck was 10 point 270 pounds and had a 28 inch neck.
