Opening day big buck

October 27th was opening day for whitetail deer in Maine. I headed afield just at legal shooting light. As I neared my ground stand, I jumped three deer. I carry a Savage 116 in .270 caliber fueled by Hornady Superformance with a 140gr SST bullet. I continued to my stand and settled in. A short while later, I began to scan the southern edge of the field. I first saw several does and fawns. I extended my scan further to the east.
To my delight, I spotted a large 8 point buck. I steadied my rifle on it's bipod and squeezed off a shot. Initially, I lost sight of him and could not understand why. After waiting and watching a couple of long minutes, I walked the 300+ yards to the spot I had last seen my buck. He had fallen in a slight depression in the field. As I neared the spot, I saw my buck. He was a very respectable 8 point buck. More amazingly, when I weighed him on a certified scale his official weight was 226 pounds.
I thank the Lord and Hornady for my success. Superformance rules!!!!!!!
