My First Buck

It was evening on the third day of our hunt, the weather had been too warm. We hadn't seen much and nothing we could shot. Our group wasn't doing bad with 2 cow elks and 2 does already in camp. But dad and I hadn't put any of those animals down. He had taken me up above a natural spring near a private boundary fence. We had seen some bucks on the other side of the fence we were hoping then might just hop over on to our side.

I had been sitting about 45 minutes my dad was around knoll, I heard clicking to left, it got my attention. I looked over and saw my dad sliding down through the grass, then I saw what had him moving, 5 deer about 200 yards out, one of them had to be a buck or dad wouldn't be on the move. Then I spotted it, the middle one was the buck. Rifle ready I waited. Dad was moving and had alerted me; it was his shot..

Then I heard it dad fired he missed just high, I fired oops a little excited I missed a foot to the right. Boom Dad fires again what the heck is wrong with dad, he can't shoot this year. He misses low this time. I exhale, hold my breath, see the sight picture, squeeze the trigger: boom ...thump the buck staggers and falls. I stole my Dads Buck and got my first buck. Using a hand loaded 308 Winchester with a Hornady 165 gr SST Hornady Brass..

Thanks Hornady, too bad dad was trying a new bullet from some one else, p.s. he came back to Hornady.
