Mantag Moose 2013

By A J Taylor

October 5, 2013

My hunting partners Gerard Marcil-Dallaire, Albert Stagg and I were hunting the Mantag River in Manitoba. The river is across Anama Bay of Lake Winnipeg and definately in moose country. We built a nice camp on a beautiful point and would hunt out of it. The next morning Albert got his boat into position near a wooded ridge in the pre-dawn. I called for about 30 minutes with no results. Albert moved the boat futher up the creek and I started calling again. As the sun was coming up I heard a faint answer. I continued calling and the bull kept coming closer grunting always growing louder. Finally Gerard heard him crashing some bush and I gave one last call and shouldered my rifle. I was using my .300 Win Mag Santa Barbara Mauser with 180 gr Hornady SPBT's, a classic moose killer. As the moose appeared all I could see was his head and neck so I centered on the neck just under his bell and fired. He dropped instantly and our moose hunt was over for another season!!
