Kansas opening day mule deer

By Clayton Griffith

December 11, 2013

It was a cold and windy opening day, December, 4th in Kansas. I drove to the hunting grounds ware I have scouted before season extensively, and have seen nice mature bucks. I walked in search of a buck I saw prior to the season start, and there were no bucks to be found, so I moved to a different spot and came upon a nice mature 10 point bedded down with does. I watched the buck for a while and decided I would move in on him. With the browning 280 loaded with 139gr SST Superformance ammo I was very confident in my shot. The buck was in wide open territory and a little over a thousand yards away, so I stalked crawled within 400 yards. The wind was howling over 30 mph so I had to adjust to make the shot. I shot and the deer dropped in an instant and then I knew I had another great mature Kansas mule deer down.
