Kansas early muzzleloader season

By William Lucas

September 24, 2013

I had seen him before opening day working a soybean field in the evening. On the second night of the season with the wind just perfect, I set up a homemade ground blind. He came out 20 minutes till the end of legal shooting light, only too far to the right in the field. I had to stalk out of the blind to get into place. I took the shot at 105 yards, only to be recovered the next morning. I had hit him with a high lung shot which left very little blood and allowed him to run 300 yards. He had fallen between some cedar trees making him undetectable in the dark.
Gross green score of 160 3/4
