First Dog of the Season

This past weekend, I was on my way home from having lunch with a friend. On a whim I pulled of road and decided to try to call in a Coyote. I drove about 2.5 miles from the pavement and figured that that should be far enough. I parked the truck in a small depression to keep it out of sight. I grabbed my my gear and off I went. Only walked about 100 yards from the truck and picked my spot. It is a small hill with a couple good sized sage brush bushes that I could use for cover. I paced off about 50 yards and set up my decoy and my FoxPro caller. When I sat down I loaded my new Howa Mini-Action in 6.5 Grendel with the Hornady 123 grn SST. I started with "kitten in distress". After a 15 minutes, nothing. Then I tried "magpie". A few minutes after that, I turned up the volume and changed to "magpie fight". After about 3 minutes I cranked up the volume and started a "jack rabbit in distress call". Within only a moment, a nice sized female came straight for the decoy. I lifted my rifle. She didn't like what she saw so she started to lope away. I quickly gave her a loud "bark" to get her attention. She stopped hard in tracks and turned to me. And that's all it took. I gave her a broad side. With a mighty "WHACK!" she was down. Howa and Hornady are a great combination!
