First deer with a rifle in NY

By Jason Plate

December 3, 2014

Growing up in Western/Central NY, my deer seasons have always been shotgun only. Just recently, NY has been allowing more and more rifle hunting, and last year my county allowed the use of a rifle. Now that I had the choice, I decided to put the Hornady American Whitetail ammo through my Remington 700 SPS varmint chambered in .308 WIN. Although, not a great test of ballistics, I was lucky enough to kill my first deer with a rifle this season at 30 yards. Bullet performance was devastating, to say the least.
