First Deer

It was 2nd season 2012 here in Colorado when I had drawn a doe tag. We were about 50 miles north of Rifle hunting in some of the most beautiful countryside you've ever seen. My partner and I had hunted hard for 4 days to no avail, everything we saw was way out of range for a sure shot. We had about given up when we came out of an aspen grove and I spotted a huge doe standing 140-150 yards away in an open field. I grabbed my rifle, an old Ruger 77 in 7mm RM, and got down into a kneeling position. The wind was blowing hard and my heart was pounding harder, I had a tough time settling the crosshairs. I relaxed and squeezed the trigger at just the right moment and saw her jump, reverse and head for the aspens about 25 yards away. After a short wait, we found her just a few feet inside the trees. The 154 grn SST had scrambled both lungs and heart.

A beautiful, big bodied end to a great hunting trip. Hornady is and will always be my first choice in the field.
