First buck out of the new woods

By Kevin Deno

I recently bought a 15 acre chunk of woods just a few miles south of my place. I set up tree stands in various locations for the 2013 MN slug season. No one from my hunting party was able to make it out on opening morning so, I decided to head out by myself. I wasn't sure which stand to sit in for the morning, so I decided to sit right in the middle of the woods. After sitting for a while before sun up I saw 2 doe's walk right underneath me which really got my heart pounding for sunlight. As the sun broke the riveen top and the woods started to become alive, directly behind me came 6 doe's being ran by a "hot to trot" buck. Needless to say I was beyond excited! I waited and watched him run these does for about 15 minutes until he finally stopped and presented himself broad side at about 140 yards. I put the cross hairs on the sweet spot with my remington 870 slugmaster and let my Hornady 12 GA SST 300 gr FTX Slug's do their work. "BOOM"....down he went, white belly up! Thanks to these Hornady shells, I was confident enough to make the shot when it counted.
