Elk - Helena National Forest
By Bob Newland
December 19, 2012
I shot the elk on October 23, 2012 in the Helena National Forest in Montana. I was guided by Audie Anderson of Ramshorn Outfitters. I shot the bull using a Browning BBL chambered in .300 Win Mag with a Leupold 3x9 Vari X II scope. I was using Hornady 180 gr SST ammo. I hit the bull in the front shoulder and he dropped within 30 yards. Bullet couldn’t have done a better job. Especially considering the size of this elk. The official SCI score is 388 3/8.
It was the first week of the Montana rifle season and there was 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground. I took him on the 4th day of my hunt on public land.
