800 Yards on First Bull with 162gr Amax

By Jared Walker

November 13, 2013

Growing up I heard my dad telling stories of my great-grandfather making what he called "artillery" shots on mule deer and elk. He had a talent for making the long shots. That love for long range shooting passed down to my dad and then to me. What made this hunt even more special was that my dad was with me when I took my first bull. The rifle I used was a Remington 700 7mm ultra mag that was purchased by dad for my 21st birthday using inheritance money from my great-grandfather. It took another 10 years before we finally got to go on our first elk hunt. Let's just say the 162gr Amax found it's mark and was just the medicine. I think great-grandpa was looking down on us and smiling that day.
