2024 marks a major milestone for Hornady Manufacturing as we celebrate 75 years of leadership and innovation in the ammunition industry. From humble beginnings in 1949, Hornady has grown into a trusted name for hunters, shooters and professionals worldwide, consistently delivering on our core values of accuracy, innovation and dependability.
A company born from passion
Hornady was founded by Joyce Hornady, a shooter and hunter who saw a need for high-quality, affordable bullets for reloading. His dedication to a mission of delivering “Ten bullets through one hole” set the tone for Hornady’s future. Despite early skepticism, Joyce’s vision set us on a path to becoming a leader in the field, with the slogan “Accurate. Deadly. Dependable.” capturing the essence of our commitment to excellence.
Over the decades, the company grew from a small ammunition manufacturing operation into an industry heavyweight. Joyce’s pioneering approach to stringent quality control ensured that every bullet met strict performance standards, helping to build a loyal customer base. Our early success allowed for the expansion into a larger facility in the 1950s, complete with an underground range for product testing and development.
A family legacy of innovation
After Joyce’s death in a plane crash 1981, his son Steve took over the business, continuing to innovate and lead the company into new markets. Steve’s son, Jason, joined Hornady in 2006, quickly becoming a key member of the team as director of sales, and now serving as our vice president. Three generations of the Hornady family have been at the helm of the brand, their deep connection to hunting and shooting ensuring they understand and anticipate the needs of our customers.
Today, we offer an extensive line of ammunition and components for rifles, handguns and shotguns. Our products are renowned for their reliability, precision and versatility, and are used by customers around the world for hunting, target shooting, personal defense and long-range shooting.
Over the years, we have introduced several groundbreaking cartridges that have transformed the shooting industry. The 6.5mm Creedmoor, developed in 2007, quickly became one of the most popular cartridges for long-range precision shooting. Known for its low recoil and accuracy, it has been embraced by both competitive shooters and hunters alike.
Following the success of the 6.5mm Creedmoor, we introduced the 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) and the 300 PRC. These cartridges, launched at the 2018 SHOT Show, pushed the boundaries of what is possible in long-range shooting. The 6.5 PRC offers superior power and flat trajectory, while the 300 PRC, designed for extreme long-range shooting, provides unmatched performance with heavier bullets.
Our dedication to innovation doesn’t stop there. We have partnered with firearms manufacturers to develop cartridges like the .480 Ruger, .204 Ruger and .375 Ruger — all of which are now favorites among hunters and shooting enthusiasts.
Marking 75 years in style
To commemorate 75 years of progress and innovation, we hosted a grand celebration on June 22 of this year at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. The event followed smaller celebrations held throughout the year, including a joint event with Ruger Firearms, another legendary brand celebrating its 75th anniversary. The main event welcomed gathered around 2,500 guests, including employees, industry partners and members of the shooting community.
Attendees enjoyed tours of our West facility, showcasing our advanced manufacturing processes. A history wall at the Heartland Events Center highlighted key moments in our evolution, from early innovations to the latest developments in ammunition technology.
Live demonstrations from expert marksmen demonstrated the reliability and performance of our products across various firearms, including our ELD-X and A-TIP Match bullets. Interactive displays allowed guests to explore current product lines and preview future releases.
The festivities concluded with a spectacular concert by country duo Big & Rich, followed by a stunning drone and fireworks show. With 320 drones lighting up the sky in the shape of our logo and popular bullet designs, the night was a worthy celebration of both our history and bright future.
In appreciation of their support, we presented our employees and industry partners with limited-edition 75th-anniversary commemorative coins. These specially designed coins, featuring iconic bullet engravings, serve as lasting reminders of our legacy and the important role our staff and supporters have played in our success.
