Monster Blue Wildebeest

By Fanie Ungerer

April 3, 2013

My youngest son, Fanie, was after a particularly large Blue Wildebeest bull (Brindled Gnu) on a Game Farm near Thabazimbi in the North West region of South Africa. After walking and stalking the herd for three solid days, his quarry finally offered a clear shot just before dusk.

Using a 9.3x62 loaded with a Hornady 286gr Interlock SP-RP travelling at 2250 f/s he squeezed the trigger. Looking through my binoculars I could clearly see the spurt of dust just behind the front leg, low down on the animal's chest. The animal took off like an arrow from a bow, ran 50 yards and collapsed stone dead - shot through the heart.

The smile on my son's face says it all.

(With him on the photo are the tracker/game guard and the PH.)
