Girl's First Buck

By Hannah Lucas

December 21, 2015

Friday, December 4th, I planned to take my better half hunting. We have had this date on the calendar for some time because we both had off work/school. It was the third day of rifle season in Southeast Kansas and it seemed like a perfect morning. Well it ended up being the perfect morning. We have been after a deer that we called "Muley" (whitetail) for 3 years now. He has gotten bigger every year, but has never given us the chance at a shot. We have multiple photos of him on game camera dating back until 2012. We have never seen him in actual daylight until a week before he was harvested. This year, he got greedy and started to follow a doe around quite a bit. He was starting to follow her in broad daylight.

So Friday morning, Hannah and I headed to our blind. It was pretty cold and there was some action early. There was a spike buck who was running around with a doe and her fawn. About 7:40 am, I could see a doe coming in through my bincoluars, and then I saw antlers. As soon as we saw a rack, we knew it was "Muley." He was following the doe, but always stayed behind the trees. The doe decided to come to our Moultrie game feeder and he made the mistake of following her. He stepped out at about 80 yards, and as soon as he stopped, Hannah pulled the trigger. He dropped about 5 feet in front of where he stood.

It is hard to explain the amount of emotions that were going on at this moment. We had finally killed a giant that we have been after for 3 years. I got to experience Hannah taking her first buck and could possible be the biggest one we will ever harvest. It was an amazing experience that we will never forget.

She took him with a Savage .270 Axis with a Nikon BDC Scope. The bullets were Hornady .270 Win 130 Gr SST Superformance. I love the whole set up.
