First Buck

I hunted for 12 years to get a good buck and this year was my year. My day started surrounded by other hunters - one of the joys of public land hunts.

I decided to follow the river walking a rub line and good tracks. I ended up walking close to 5 miles before i decided to take a break at a large parking lot next to a picked bean field. I was stopped talking to another hunter who passed on a few doe that morning. I remarked on how i wish i had his luck when gun shots rang out across the field.

At 500 yards i could see it was a very good buck. Three hunters pushed him out from the top of the hill and he was sprinting toward the river. Another hunter shot before he ran past and jumped in. I ran after him trying to get a shot. I watched him swim as i tried to find him in my scope I saw him climb the other bank. He stop for a moment either feeling safe or simply out of breath.

I later went back and ranged the shot I took it was 105 yards to the other bank. I took the shot trying to thread the needle between him and the trees. I though I had missed until me and a fellow hunter crossed the river to see if we could find him. The blood trail was 2 feet wide and less the 25 yards long. At the end laid my first buck and old battled 10 point buck with one hole in him. The bullet traveled through his ribs and blew out the opposite shoulder a perfect lung shot.

Hornady is the only ammo I use for a reason – unsurpassed accuracy and deadly results.
