500+ yard mule deer buck

By Eric Ford

December 8, 2012

From a hilltop we could see the herd of mule deer, slowly moving up from a lower area. My buddy got a quick range to the herd: 470 yards. I got the bipod legs down but the grass was too high for the scope to clear. I switched to a long-leg tripod system and could see the herd perfectly as the buck moved up. Another deep breath, I got the holdover point just above the top of the leg and let 'er go. I thought I undershot the herd because the herd simply started walking back down the hilll, except for the big buck. He turned a quarter of the way, moved real slow, then started to sway and went down. We checked the range again: 533 yards.
