Security everywhere you want it.

You’re on your way home from the shooting range when you remember that you promised to pick up your son from his middle school basketball practice. No problem you think, the school’s on your way, and as you’re a few minutes early, you’ll pop into the gym and watch the last few minutes of practice.

But when you perform this simple task that most people take for granted, what do you do with your gun?

It’s a fact of life that, if you own firearms, you’ll have to travel with them from time to time. But that doesn’t change another reality — that your gun remains your responsibility all the time. That’s even more apparent with gun thefts from vehicles on the rise.

“Your firearm must be under your control at all times,” the National Shooting Sports Foundation says in its brochure — Firearms Safety in Vehicles. “When it’s not, it should be placed in locked storage and out of sight.”

As a supporter of Project ChildSafe and the “Own it? Respect it. Secure it.” campaign, Hornady couldn’t agree more. That’s why Hornady and SnapSafe provide a number of ways to keep guns secure and out of sight in your vehicle — and keep the public safe.

Totally secure but close at hand

The RAPiD Vehicle Safe from Hornady provides an ideal solution. It fits most four-inch barrel pistols and two-inch revolvers and provides all the benefits you’ve come to expect from a RAPiD Safe.

First, that means security. Made of 14-gauge steel, the RAPiD Vehicle Safe exceeds ATSM International safety standards for:

  • Child and pry resistance
  • Lock strength
  • Drop, pick and saw tests
  • High-attack resistance

But RAPiD also means fast, dependable touch-free entry. With a swipe of the RFID-activated wristband, key fob or sticker, the spring-assisted lid pops open and presents your handgun. Pretty slick, huh?

What’s also slick is how the RAPiD Vehicle Safe fits in your car. Placed between the seats or next to the center console, its patent-pending mounting system inflates to conform to your vehicle’s interior without modifications.

Fasten the security cable to the seat frame, and your gun is protected and out of sight but always close at hand.

Need more room? Turn your trunk into a safe

If locked and out of sight is the goal, you might think storing guns in your trunk is good enough. Think again. After all, if vehicle locks were impenetrable, cars would never get stolen. Fortunately, you can make your car trunk or the back of your SUV much more secure with the SnapSafe Trunk Safe or Under Bed Safe.

Hornady’s RAPiD® Vehicle Safe — fast and dependable touch-free entry

With a 13-gauge steel exterior and six-gauge steel door, the Trunk Safe works well for sportsmen transporting firearms or law enforcement officers carrying long guns in their patrol car’s trunk. Its internal hinges and premium gas shocks operate so smoothly that you can open the lid with one finger. True to its name, the Trunk Safe fits like a glove in the trunk of a car.

Exterior dimensions:

  • 42 inches wide
  • Seven inches high
  • 13 inches deep

If you need more room, the SnapSafe Under Bed Safe fits nicely in the back of many full-size SUVs. Made of 14-gauge steel, its slide-out drawer is rated for 150 pounds and can accommodate several long guns and handguns. The Under Bed Safe comes in two sizes.

XXL exterior dimensions:

  • 48 inches wide
  • Seven inches high
  • 24 inches deep

Large exterior dimensions:

  • 40 inches wide
  • Six inches high
  • 22 inches deep

The Trunk Safe and both Under Bed Safe models feature:

  • Digital lock, plus key backup.
  • Pre-drilled bolt holes for permanent installation.
  • Three-foot cable for added security.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best

While your trunk alone can’t properly secure firearms, neither can your glove box or center console. Even if you lock them, they’re just too easy to pry open. But a simple box can do the trick — if it’s the right box.

SnapSafe produces Lock Boxes in three sizes to secure handguns large and small in your car or in your suitcase when flying. All meet TSA guidelines and are California Department of Justice approved.

SnapSafe Lock Boxes meet TSA guidelines

What makes it the right box? For starters, four of the five models are made of 16-gauge steel. The TrekLite Lock Box — XL is made of impact-resistant polycarbonate that’s a third the weight of steel but exceptionally durable.

All five models are available with key lock entry. The Lock Box — XXL and TrekLite Lock Box — XL are also available with combination locks. All SnapSafe Lock Boxes come with a 1,500-pound-rated cable for securing them inside your car, trunk or suitcase. Sizes range from the Lock Box LG to the Lock Box XXL.

LG dimensions:

  • 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches by 1.75 inches
  • Six pounds

XXL dimensions:

  • 11.5 inches by 8.5 inches by 2.5 inches
  • Six pounds

Whether it’s small or large, a lock box or a safe, the best way to prevent gun thefts, accidents or misuse is always to securely store firearms when they’re not in use. And locking the car doors or locking the trunk alone won’t turn your vehicle into a gun safe.
