The 12 Rules of Precision Reloading

Precision shooters often cling to reloaders' dogma, but scientific testing frequently dispels these myths. Here are the 12 uncomfortable ballistic realities every competitive shooter needs to understand.

  1. Everyone makes mistakes
    No matter your experience, if you reload enough, you will eventually do something boneheaded, ranging from minor inconveniences to catastrophic failures.

  2. Primers aren't always enough
    In large cases, a primer alone may not generate enough pressure to move a bullet, potentially leading to dangerous secondary spikes if a full charge is added behind a stuck projectile.

  3. Slow powder sensitivity
    The slowest powder isn't always the most stable; some have higher velocity sensitivity to minor weight changes than their "optimum" counterparts.

  4. Velocity nodes are myths
    Apparent "flat spots" in ladder tests are typically the result of small sample sizes rather than repeatable physical phenomena.

  5. All cartridges leak
    Gas or powder always outruns the bullet early in the interior ballistic cycle before the projectile seals the bore.

  6. Dispersion nodes can't be "found"
    While accuracy nodes exist, they are caused by variables (like center of gravity offset) that shooters cannot clock or manipulate reliably.

  7. Most bullets wobble
    Nearly all bullets oscillate upon exiting the barrel; this angular rate does not mean the bullet is unstable if it dampens out downrange.

  8. Faster twist doesn't equal accuracy
    Once you achieve adequate gyroscopic stability, increasing twist rate further does not inherently shrink group sizes.

  9. Jump sensitivity matters
    Bullet design dictates how sensitive a projectile is to disturbances (like unburnt propellant whacking the base) as it leaves the muzzle.

  10. Zeroing requires high volume
    Mean point of impact varies group to group; a 3-shot zero is statistically unreliable compared to a 20-shot sample.

  11. Extreme spread is variable
    Group size fluctuates randomly. Use mean radius or standard deviation to lower your anxiety and get a true picture of performance.

  12. The Error Budget
    Targeting is split between random effects (load tuning) and bias effects (shooter skill/wind reading). You must master both to win.
