On opening day of Wyoming's 2010 Antelope season, I found myself and my hunting partner enjoying a beautiful sunrise as we sat on a hilltop, just a couple of miles from the Bighorn Mountains. We glassed distant herds for the first 3 hours, but saw nothing that was close to our position or worth stalking. We decided to head out to to another vantage point to glass some more, when I saw several antelope cresting a hill to our West. I got in the prone position and tossed my Leica rangefinder to my partner. We watched 4 or 5 does come up and over the top, when a nice buck stoped at the crest of the hill. I asked for the range and he replied, 481 between his legs. I put the 500 yard mark on my Leupold varmint hunters reticle just behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger. The Hornady, 25-06 Rem, 117 SST Superformance load, took him through both lungs, he dropped straight down on his belly and proceeded to roll agout 20 yards down the steep hill until he got caught up in some sagebrush. The Hornady 117 SST had provided terminal preformance at almost 500 yards.
