I read the article by Joseph von Benedikt on the Hornady GMX bullet in the November 2012 issue of Shooting Times magazine and decided to give this ammo a try during my elk hunt in northwest Colorado, November 3-7. I used a Browning A-Bolt in .270 Winchester with the Hornady 130-grain GMX factory load. My hunting buddies were both shooting .30-06's with 180-grain bullets and they were skeptical of the 130-grain .270 for elk.
I shot a large cow elk from 220 yards. The bullet hit about half way up the body at the thickest point and about 6 inches behind the shoulder. The bullet passed all the way through, between the ribs on both sides, the elk dropped in place and was dead within 30 seconds or so. There was almost no meat damage.
I was very pleased with the GMX, although disappointed I could not recover the bullet. I may try the GMX on cow elk next year using a .243 Winchester.
