Dear Team Hornady,
For more than thirty years, I have been longing to hunt Pronghorns. I can recall admiring this magnificent and speedy animal in my youth. However, due to military service, parenthood, and other obligations, it never worked out until 2011. After receiving my Idaho drawing notification, I quickly began scouting and tracking the movement of bucks beginning three months before season. Armed with great scouting information, I knew I could locate a fine buck; I just needed to be able to put him down out to 600 yards.
I began building the ultimate load to tackle this trophy animal. I began and ended with the Hornady SST for my Remington 700 VTR in 308 Winchester. This .308 diameter 165 grain and 150 grain bullet provided the performance for my needs. The high BC and interlock design was the perfect match for both my accuracy and terminal ballistics needs. For this hunt, I decided to go with the heavier 165 grain SST, which matched my needs for the open terrain of the windy Idaho high desert.
On opening day, I initially stuck with my game plan and began glassing for my potential 80 B&C class buck. However, as dawn was quickly turning to day, with temperatures expected in the mid 80’s, I decided to find this fine buck on my own terms. While walking and glassing, I spotted the herd, and my trophy buck chasing the does.
After an hour of crawling in sagebrush and cheat grass, I ranged my buck at 419 yards. While I was well practiced at this range, and knowing my 165 grain SST would do its job, I decided to close the gap. I was able to position myself at 250 yards with the sun at my back. When the buck presented a broadside opportunity, I didn’t hesitate. With the slow squeeze of my trigger, I sent the 165 grain SST down-range. The buck fell in his tracks!
After tagging my trophy, I relaxed and absorbed the moment. This hunt was 30 years in the making, and I will remember it for the rest of my life. Since it hasn’t been the required 60 days, the buck unofficially scored just over 77 B&C with 15” horns. While he missed the B&C by less than three, he is a trophy to me.
I owe the clean kill and the harvest of this buck and previous animals, to your outstanding products. While I have used and continue to use other Hornady bullets, I have to say, the SST is my favorite. I have found that the SST provides great Ballistic Coefficiency coupled with fantastic terminal ballistics. I will continue to use the SST in all my hunting and target loads from my .243 Winchester to my .300 Winchester Magnum. Thanks again, Joe Lake.
