Winning six of the eight stages, Duff said, "Speed and accuracy are the name of the game for steel, and with Hornady XTPs, I'm always covered for accuracy. I was blessed to have a successful year with Hornady alongside me, and look forward to many more seasons to come."
Duff also weighed in on the new venue. "I was apprehensive about the match moving locations since there was so much history in California," she said, "but I believe it was a welcome change. And it was nice to see a major championship on the east coast!"
Max Michel (right) shot Hornady® 9mm 115-grain XTP® bullets in his pistol, winning three of the eight stages for a second place finish in the Open Division. Michel, who is known for his speed and clean footwork, relies on ammo that lets him to do his job. "Hornady 115 grain XTP bullets deliver the power and accuracy I need when shooting steel," he said, "so I can focus on other things."
Michel approves of the match's new location, which moved from Piru, California to Frostproof, Florida. "I think the new venue shows promise for involving new and younger shooters," he said. "I'm happy to promote the sport and watch attendance grow."
Match Director, Phil Strader, agreed. "Florida has a very active shooting culture," Strader said, "and Universal Shooting Academy was ideal for allowing the competitors to stay in one place from practice, side matches and to the main venue itself. Blake Miguez (shown above) won the Limited Division with a score of 1934.8636, shooting Hornady® 200 grain FMJ bullets in his .40 caliber pistol. "The feeding reliability and consistent weight at the chrono is important to me," said Miguez, "and Hornady 200 grain bullets provided that confidence factor in such a prestigious match." Miguez fully appreciates the significance of his title win. "This was my first national title, and holding it at the same time as the World title is an amazing feeling," he said.
Defending National Champion, Jessie Duff, won seven stages to take the Ladies Limited Division for the fifth consecutive year. She then turned up the heat with a stunning performance to win her first Ladies Open Division championship, shooting a clean match and winning nine stages. Duff used Hornady® 180 grain XTP® bullets in her 40 S&W pistol for the Limited title, and Hornady® 124 grain XTP® bullets in her 38 Super Comp for the Open Division win.
Duff knows choosing the right bullet is crucial to success. "With numerous tight shots and no-shoots everywhere to ramp up the disaster factor, I needed to know my bullets were going exactly where I put them," she said. "Using Hornady XTPs meant never having to second guess accuracy."
"I felt both matches had very good and challenging stages," Duff added. "Using iron sights elevated the difficulty of the Limited match. Adding more no-shoots to the Open match increased the difficulty equal to an upgrade in guns!"
Both Miguez and Duff are prepping for the 2012 World Steel Challenge, which takes place November 1-4, 2012 at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida.

I designed a course of fire combining long and short rifle presentations that would challenge the experienced competitor without discouraging an intermediate shooter."
2012 FNH USA 3-Gun Championship
Team Hornady® overwhelmed a field of more than 300 competitors during the FNH 3-Gun Point Series Championship, September 20-22, 2012, at the 2,000-acre Peacemaker National Training Center in Glengary, West Virginia. With the Appalachian Mountains as a backdrop, and a theme built upon the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the eight-stage match utilized manmade shooting bays and the natural wooded terrain.
Clint Upchurch won the Open Division, winning five of the eight stages with a score of 780.71, shooting Hornady® 223 Rem 75-grain Steel Match™ in his rifle and Hornady® 125-grain HAP® bullets in his 38 Super Comp pistol. “The 75-grain Steel Match bullets were excellent at handling steel targets out to 400 yards,” said Upchurch. “They fly true and have plenty of energy to move those steel targets. The 125-grain HAP bullets functioned flawlessly, and the superior accuracy gave me confidence during the match’s tough pistol shots.”
Upchurch was especially intrigued by the stages’ challenging designs. “Shooters were given the option to shoot the stages in multiple ways, engaging specific targets with their choice of firearm,” he said. “These stages became really thought provoking because of the variables presented, giving the match a unique ‘flavor’ that was more challenging than one would think.”

Harris said, "I like how super accurate the V-MAX ammo is out to 300 or 400 yards. I know I can rely on it to hit the hard stuff in matches." The Handgun Action Event required fast draw and speed shooting at three separate stages, with five steel targets in varying sizes, shapes and distances. "It's a super accurate bullet that performs well on steel targets," he explained, "with knock down power I can rely on every time."

Shooting from standing, freestyle and Creedmoor positions, competitors can shoot a pistol or revolver. Koenig shot Hornady® 6mm 105 grain BTHP bullets in his Remington 6mm BR. The Handgun Precision Event consisted of Rimfire .22 caliber Rimfire pistol or revolvers shooting bulls eye precision, Olympic Biathlon-style steel targets from various distances. Targets were engaged in three stages with targets set at different distances.
Match Director Larry Stuhman derives a great deal of satisfaction in creating a yearly match for the close-knit group of competitors that come for challenge and enjoyment. "Now in its 27th year, the match continues to be popular because it tests competitors in Precision, Action and Long Range shooting disciplines," Stuhman said.

"It's easier to concentrate on each shot's performance when I'm confident I have the best ammunition," Bernosky said.
Bernosky won impressive first place wins in the following trophy matches over the four-day match:
- Mumma Trophy Overall National Championship

Title defender, Max Michel, won the Open Division, taking six of the 14 stages shooting Hornady® 125 grain HAP® bullets in his 9mm pistol. “Not only do I count on Hornady bullets to be reliable and accurate,” said Michel, “but I know they’ll give me the competitive edge I need at a Level 3 match.” He was especially impressed with the match’s creative stages. “Long range steel targets were painted the same color as the background, which made them difficult to see,” he said.
Blake Miguez returned to the Area 3 match enjoying a back-to-back victory to reclaim his title in the Limited Division, winning five of the 14 stages, shooting Hornady® 200 grain XTP® 40 caliber projectiles. “The 200 grain XTP performed consistently on all of the match’s wide variety targets,” said Miguez, “especially the close range and long range targets out to 42 yards.” His aggressive strategy included maintaining accuracy during super fast movements on every stage.
Team Hornady® member, Jessie Duff, earned special congratulations by winning the High Lady Open division. She won 12 of the 14 stages as a first time competitor in the Area 3 match, shooting Hornady® 124 grain 9mm XTP® bullets in her pistol. "Since this was my first USPSA match of the year,” Duff explained, “I knew the 124 grain, 9mm Hornady XTP bullet would produce winning results, and it did."
Match Director Sherwyn Greenfield returned to deliver a challenging course of fire, introducing a triple swinger target built on a steel framework, with two pivot points using standard paper metric targets. As usual, Greenfield added his personal touch to each stage, forcing competitors to shoot from a variety of positions that were technically challenging, and required a solid shooting strategy.

Thomas Glas finished fourth overall in the Metallic Class and placed seventh overall in the Open Class, shooting Hornady® .355 125 grain 9mm HAP® hand loaded bullets. "Hand loading to a 130 Power Factor gives me the best control of recoil and sight movement," said Glas. "I trust the accuracy with every round."
The match included a setup similar to the recent NRA Bianchi Cup, with stages named the Practical, Barricade, Falling Plate, and Mover. Both competitors will return to Germany in September to represent Team Hornady® at the World Action Pistol Championships.
On the home front, Team Hornady® members, Max Michel, Blake Miguez, and Jesse Duff tore up the eight-stage course of the Pro Am Championship, July 13-15, 2012 at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida. Over 300 of the country's best action pistol shooters shot more than 300 falling steel plates to compete for Limited and Open division titles. The number of targets knocked down determined the scores.
Max Michel put together a solid training plan specifically for this match, and his efforts panned out with an overall win in the Open Division. "I used Hornady 125 grain HAP bullets for their consistency and extreme accuracy," said Michel. "It's my favorite all around projectile for its soft shooting."
Blake Miguez took second in the Limited Division, winning four of the stages shooting Hornady® 200 grain FMJ in his .40 caliber pistol. Miguez also finished third in the Open Division, shooting Hornady® 125 grain HAP® in his 38 Super Comp. "Using heavier bullets gave me a better chance of knocking down the steel every time," said Miguez. "In this match, you lose the point if the steel doesn't fall."
Jesse Duff, the first female to earn a spot in the Pro Am Match with an Amateur Open Match win the year before, took the Ladies Limited Amateur Division for the third time. The Hornady® 115 grain XTP® she shot is a personal favorite. "It's simply the most accurate bullet and I use it for all my 9mm," said Duff. "This was a very exciting and fast paced match. Each stage has a par-time, and your abilities drove the way you shot."
Match Director Phil Strader added, "The Pro Am is the most unique match of its kind. Every target reacts, which pumps up the spectators. Both Pros and Amateurs get to utilize all their shooting skills in a format that is simple, safe and fun."

June Competitions
Team Hornady® (TH) sent its best 3-Gun competitors to the second invitational 3-Gun Nation Pro Series event, June 16, 2012, at the South River Gun Club in Covington, Georgia. Hornady® ammo gave five team members the accuracy they needed to finish in the top 15, out of 64 competitors. The main match course featured five short stages with average time limits of 45 seconds. Loose gravel on the bay surfaces made quick stage-to-stage moves tricky.

"Hornady .355 147 grain FMJ RN provided the accuracy and reliability I needed to win."
Rob Ormond also finished sixth at the 2012 Snipers Hide Cup, held at a private 7,000-acre ranch in Douglas, Wyoming, June 21-23, 2012. This long-range precision field rifle match left no room for error, as practical shooting skills, target recognition, ranging and wind estimation were key.
Ormond shot Hornady® 208 grain A-MAX® bullets in his 300 Win Mag rifle, and Hornady® Steel Match® 125 grain HAP® in his 9mm pistol. Ormond explained, "The 208 grain A-MAX bullets gave me the high ballistic coefficient and velocity I needed in my 300 Win Mag. It shot flat and did better in the high switching winds of Wyoming, as well as having a lot of energy when they hit the steel targets."

The presses were created as a surprise for the company’s President and Vice President, Steve and Jason Hornady, as a way to build excitement for the release of the Zombie Max™ line. The Hornadys then commissioned two more presses be built and autographed by Steve Hornady for public auction to benefit charity. The first press was donated to benefit USA Shooting, and now the second and last in the series will go to benefit HAVA. Click here for details about the tool’s features and technical abilities. The retail version of the Lock-N-Load® Ammo Plant sells for $1,330.
“We thought this would be a fun, unique, and functional way for reloading enthusiasts to participate in the zombie craze that is currently so popular,” said Steve Hornady, “while helping HAVA in their efforts to assist disabled American combat veterans.”

Michael Voigt repeated his Open Division win in 2012. |
Barry Dueck won his third consecutive Heavy Optics title. |
Trip McIngvale: 2nd Trooper, 3rd Tactical Scoped Divisions |
Michael Voigt repeated last year's performance to win the Open Division, shooting Hornady® 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition in his long-range rifle, 9mm 125 grain HAP® bullets in his pistol, and 223 Rem 75 grain Match™ ammunition in his rifle. "The Ironman is the equivalent of three other matches combined," said Voigt. "Knowing I can rely on Hornady ammo at every stage is a winning factor in my performance."
Barry Dueck won his third consecutive Heavy Optics division title, shooting Hornady® 308 caliber 178 grain BTHP Match™ bullets in his rifle, 9mm 147 grain XTP® bullets in his pistol, and 6.5 Creedmoor 140 grain A-MAX® ammunition in his long-range rifle. "The 178 grain Hornady Match ammo was a huge advantage on the spinner targets," said Dueck. "I could hit them hard and spin them with as little as two hits!"
Trip McIngvale took second in the Limited class and earned third place in the Tactical Scoped division which was shot later in the week, shooting Hornady® 223 Rem 75 grain Steel Match® in his rifle, 9mm 125 grain Steel Match® in his pistol, and 308 Win 178 grain BTHP Superformance® Match™ in his long-range rifle.
Travis Gibson also took second place in the punishing Trooper class, which requires competitors to carry everything for the entire match, with automatic disqualification for anyone using something they didn't pack from the start. Gibson shot Hornady® Steel Match® ammunition.
Other notable Team Hornady® finishes in the Tactical Scoped division include Katie Harris (1st Lady) and John Paul Gangle (1st Senior).
2012 3-Gun circuit
Team Hornady® is dominating the 2012 3-Gun circuit, with Tate Moots and Jared Milinazzo taking multiple division titles at the Inaugural He-Man 3-Gun National Championship, June 2-3, at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. Sixty competitors were required to shoot a minimum 308 Win rifle, .45 caliber pistol, and a 12-gauge pump shotgun while they ran seven open terrain stages.
|
Tate Moots |
Jared Milinazzo |
Clint Upchurch |
Jeff Cramblit |
Moots won first place in both the Heavy Metal Optics Law Enforcement Divisions, shooting Hornady® 308 Win 155-grain TAP® ammunition in his rifle, and Hornady® 45 Auto 230-grain ammunition in his pistol. "Having Hornady as my ammunition sponsor means I can always count on bullets that work and perform perfectly," he said.
Milinazzo won the Wee-Man (smaller than 308 Win rifles) Division, shooting Hornady® 68 grain BTHP match bullets in his rifle, and Hornady® 40 caliber 180 grain HAP® bullets in his pistol. "The 68 grain BTHP bullets made the long range targets 'flash'," he explained. "The 180 grain HAP bullets are always accurate for the 50 to 100-yard pistol shots."
Meanwhile on the east coast, Team Hornady® members Clint Upchurch and Jeff Cramblit, competed at the Bushmaster Tarheel 3-Gun Challenge at the Durham Pistol & Rifle Club in Haw River, North Carolina, June 2-3. Upchurch won the Overall Open Division, taking five out of eight stages, while Cramblit took third in the Tactical Optics Division. A total of 154 competitors shot semi-auto rifles, shotguns and pistols while running a series of stages designed to test their speed, accuracy and self-defense skills.
Upchurch shot Hornady® 223 Rem 75-grain Steel Match® in his rifle, and Hornady® 9mm 125-grain HAP® bullets in his pistol. "The 75-grain Steel Match provided outstanding long range accuracy," said Upchurch. "I chose the 125-grain for its excellent feeding characteristics and superb accuracy." His plan, which combined perfectly timing the targets with a rock solid position, allowed him to shoot the long-range targets quickly and cleanly.
Cramblit shot Hornady® 223 Rem 53-grain Superformance® in his rifle, and Hornady® 124-grain XTP® handloads in his pistol. "The match was a little rifle heavy so the Superformance accuracy, speed, and high ballistic co-efficient were definite advantages in my outcome," he said.
Team Hornady® members Clint Upchurch, Rob Romero and Jansen Jones won the Colt 3 Man 3 Gun Championship, May 20, in Topton, Pennsylvania. This is the first in a two-part series of 3 gun matches designed to be shot with 3-man teams. The second event will take place July 14-15 in West Virginia.
Trigger The Vote!
The NRA Freedom Action Foundation is sponsoring the "Trigger The Vote" program to focus on non-partisan voter registration activities. They've enlisted the help of Chuck Norris and Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey to help them reach out to American gun owners and encourage voter registration.
Visit their website to register online in just a few easy steps! And spread the word to others.
Chuck Norris stands behind this program with these words…
You Think You're Protecting Your Rights Because You Own A Gun.
But Do You Have The One Thing You Really Need: A Voter Registration Card?
People ask me all the time how to protect our rights. Our rights are like our bodies - they need exercise to stay healthy. So it's great that you've chosen to exercise your rights to own a gun.
But that's not enough. If we don't also protect our rights, we're going to lose them.
And the only way to protect our rights is to vote for the candidates who support them. But if you're not registered to vote, you've already surrendered.
I've heard all the excuses people give for not registering to vote - and excuses is all they are.
That's why I agreed to serve as Honorary Chairman of Trigger the Vote - the nonpartisan voter registration drive sponsored by the NRA's Freedom Action Foundation.
I will never surrender, and neither should you. Get tough - register to vote!

Honorary Chairman, Trigger the Vote
Urgent Legislative Alert
Hornady® Manufacturing urgently encourages all firearms owners, hunters and sportsmen to immediately call their U.S. Senators and urge them to VOTE YES on the Sportsmen's Act (Senate Amendment 2232).
Sponsored by the bipartisan senate co-chairs of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) and filed as an amendment to the 2012 Farm Bill (S.3240), the Sportsmen's Act is the most important single piece of pro-sportsmen legislation in a generation.
This historic legislation includes the firearms industry's top legislative priority, the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S.838), which would clarify that ammunition is excluded from regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
Anti-hunting groups led by the Center for Biological Diversity are suing the EPA to force a ban on traditional ammunition made with lead components that would devastate hunting and shooting sports participation, drive up ammunition prices on average by almost 200 percent and dry up conservation funding.
This historic, bipartisan legislation is strongly supported by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and over 40 of the nation's leading sportsmen and conservation groups like the NRA, Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation, Duck Unlimited, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the Boone and Crockett Club.
The Sportsmen's Act is a package of 16 separate bills including the majority of sportsmen's legislative priorities in this Congress. (See below for an overview of the components of the bill.) A similar but less extensive package of bills, the Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012 (H.R. 4089), was passed by the House in April by a bipartisan vote of 276 to 146. Passage of this unprecedented pro-sportsmen's legislation will promote, protect and preserve our nation's hunting, shooting and conservation heritage for generations to come.
But you must act now! The Senate will take up the Farm Bill this week. Anti-hunting forces are aggressively trying to block the Senate from even considering the Sportsmen's Act. Call your U.S. Senators at 202-224-3121 and urge them to support the bipartisan Sportsmen's Act. Help save our hunting and shooting sports heritage.
Sportsmen's Priorities in the Sportsmen's Act of 2012
The Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act: Specifically excludes ammunition and fishing tackle from the Toxic Substances Control Act, preventing unnecessary regulations that could devastate hunting, shooting, conservation funding and the firearm and ammunition industries.
Making Public Lands Public: Requires that the 1.5 percent of annual Land and Water Conservation Fund funding is made available to secure public access to federal public land for hunting, fishing, and other recreational purposes.
Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act: Makes Pittman-Robertson funds available to states for a longer period of time for the creation and maintenance of shooting ranges. The bill encourages federal land agencies to cooperate with state and local authorities to maintain shooting ranges and limits liability for these agencies.
Polar Bear Conservation and Fairness Act: Allows for the Secretary of the Interior to authorize permits for re-importation of legally harvested polar bears from approved populations in Canada before the 2008 ban.
Recreational Lands Self Defense Act: Prohibits the Secretary of the Army from enforcing any regulation that keeps an individual from possessing firearms in Army Corps of Engineer Water Resource Development projects or facilities.
Hornady® Manufacturing encourages all firearms owners to call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to urge their senators to vote YES on the Sportsmen's Act of 2012 (Amendment 2232 to the Farm Bill).

"They're my universal load for everything from the Bianchi Cup, to the Steel Challenge and Pro-Am matches."
Duff explained what makes the Bianchi Cup especially prestigious in the shooting world. "You have to be precise in your accuracy and consistency," she said. "There is no room for mistakes. Winning a Bianchi title carries a lot of weight and respect."
Michael Voigt finished in the top 15 of the Open Division, shooting Hornady® 115 grain XTP® 9mm bullets. "Hornady XTP bullets shoot very small groups in every pistol, and load development is very easy. The precision and consistency Hornady puts into the manufacturing process is evident. Winning Streak Continues
Team Hornady® members spread out across the country in May, using award-winning Hornady® products to win several major competitions.
Max Michel returned to the Magnolia and Pistol Club Range in Jackson, Miss., the place where he kicked off his competitive years. This time around he won the overall Single Stack Division in the 2012 Mississippi Classic on May 20th, shooting Hornady® 45 caliber 230 grain HAP® bullets. Fellow Team Hornady® member, Blake Miguez, shot Hornady® 40 caliber 200 grain XTP® projectiles to place first in the overall Limited Division. The popular USPSA 10-stage match set a new attendance record with 232 competitors from 11 states, as well as Norway, Jamaica and the Philippines.
Team Hornady® also ventured to the rolling farmlands of Central Missouri, to compete at the 2012 CMMG Midwest 3-Gun Championships, May 18-20, at the Fire for Effect Range in Fayette. Held as part of the 3-Gun Nation Divisional point series, the match attracted 200 of the best shooters in the world. Barry Dueck finished second in Tactical Optics Heavy division, using Hornady® 308 168-grain A-MAX® in his rifle. “Hornady 168-grain A-MAX has great reliability in my LMT rifle and makes a solid impact on steel targets,” he said.
Jared Milinazzo took third in Tactical Optics, shooting Hornady® 40 caliber 180-grain HAP® bullets in his pistol, and Hornady® 68-grain BTHP in his 5.56 rifle. Jeff Cramblit finished in the top 10 percent of Tactical Irons division, shooting Hornady® 9mm 124-grain bullets in his pistol, and Hornady® 223 Rem 53-grain Superformance® in his rifle.
Team Hornady’s® Bobby McGee has been especially impressive in IDPA matches this year, winning the 2012 Central Valley California Regional IDPA match, held May 12th, in Bakersfield. McGee said, “I use Hornady® 147-grain 9mm FMJ because they’re soft shooting bullets, and I can depend on their unparalleled accuracy.” Bobby has placed first in his last four IDPA matches.
Score High Tactical Rifle Challenge
Team Hornady® members Tony Gimmellie and Rob Ormond competed in the Score High Tactical Rifle Challenge, May 12 - 13, 2012. Returning to the famous Founders Ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the second year, the match was a Precision Rifle Series qualifier. Attracting 48 competitors from 13 states, the Sandia Mountains provided a spectacular backdrop for the 20-stage event, which was created by match director Charlie Robertson.
Tony Gimmellie, won first place in both the Military Law Enforcement category and High .308, and finished 13th overall in the main event. Tony noted, “Hornady 308 Superformance 178 grain BTHP in my .308 rifle with a 24-inch barrel, was the ideal round to use at known distance targets out to 600 yards. The extra velocity of the .308 Superformance provides a definite advantage over other brands of factory ammo.”
Team Hornady® member Rob Ormond finished sixth overall in the main match, shooting Hornady® 6.5 Creedmoor 140 grain A-MAX® in his rifle. “I can always count on Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor ammo to perform like it should,” Ormond said. “It gives me the confidence I need during matches.”
In addition to their rifles, competitors carried 30-pound Eberlestock-type packs loaded with wind meters, ammunition, binoculars, eyes and ear protection, range finders, and food.
The Score High Tactical Rifle Challenge was created to promote and expand the sport, and offers dedicated core precision rifle competitors challenging stages with multiple shooting positions. Generous industry sponsors produced a $40,000 prize table that gave appreciative competitors a broad choice of products.

2012 Survival Trial
In the dead of night on May 5, 2012, Team Hornady® members, Riley McElroy and Jayden Quinlan tossed on their packs, grabbed their guns, and headed into the dark, rugged terrain of the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. They were competing in Survival Trial, a 2-person team, 24-hour endurance event that spans 30 to 50 miles, with shooting, mental, and physical obstacles scattered throughout the course. Designed to push competitors past their limits, Survival Trial requires shooters to think creatively, as they would in survival situations.
McElroy and Quinlan traversed miles of rough trails throughout the night, and completed various shooting and mental stations before arriving at the long-range "starvation survival" shot. With two, 14" x 17" steel silhouettes placed across a canyon at an angle away from the shooters, the scenario proved from the start to be very challenging. Using Hornady® .308 168 grain Superformance® MatchTM at a 940-yard target, Team Hornady® hit the mark within the stress-inducing time limit.
"Using Superformance with its faster velocity and the 168 A-MAX bullet really helped in making our long range shot," said Jayden Quinlan. "The wind was very hard to read across the canyon, but Superformance helped minimize the effects."
Professional Marksmen and the NRA Whittington Center successfully created an event that was both unique and difficult, and left a long-lasting impression with every competitor. "Survival Trial challenged us both mentally and physically," said Riley McElroy. "But it was rewarding and I hope to try it again."
Team Hornady® scored an impressive third place finish, completing the course in 22-hours. The team also found the hidden grand prize, from the series of prizes scattered throughout the course.

Two IBS records set with A-Max® bullets
Steve Sabo of Leechurg, Pennsylvania brought precision to a whole new level by setting two aggregate International Benchrest Shooters (IBS) records in 2011. He was honored for his accomplishment during the 2012 IBS Annual Meeting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he was also named the 2011 IBS 1,000-Yard Shooter of the Year.
Shooting Hornady® A-MAX® bullets in his 300 Winchester Short Magnum, Sabo set the Heavy Gun 1,000-yard, 10-match group aggregate record, with an average group size of 6.0244”, and the 6-match group aggregate record, with an average group size of 5.2865”. The targets were shot from April to August 2011, at the Harry Jones Memorial 1,000 Yard Gun Club in Fairview, West Virginia.
All 1,000-yard benchrest competitions are shot at a distance of 1,000 yards, with 10-match scores accumulating over a season of shooting. The objective is placing five or 10 shots on a target as close together as possible. No more than two matches can be shot per day. The six best scores from those 10 matches are used to determine the 6-match group aggregates.
“I’ve been chasing the record for quite a while,” said Sabo. “But then I started shooting Hornady A-MAX bullets, which provided the precision I needed to get the job done. I am very impressed with Hornady’s dedication to product.”
Designed to achieve match shooting precision, Hornady A-MAX® bullets combine an aerodynamic secant ogive profile, sharp pointed tip, and unequaled concentricity to deliver extremely high ballistic coefficient for a near perfection in flight.

Shooting the Level 3 match, Michel shot Hornady® 230 grain HAP® ammo in his new Sig 1911 MAX pistol, adding, “I like shooting Hornady 230 grain HAP, because it’s incredibly soft in recoil and extremely accurate while smooth feeding in the chamber.”
Utilizing classic paper targets, poppers and plates, this year’s 12 stages were set up with traditional USPSA combination classic and metric targets with one third of the targets being steel.
Other members of Team Hornady® traveled down to Liberty Hill, Texas and competed in the 2012 Texas Multi-Gun Championship. They finished in the top 4% of registered shooters.
Tate Moots finished second in the Heavy Scoped Division, shooting Hornady® 308 155 grain TAP® in his rifle and Hornady® 9mm 125 grain Steel Match® in his pistol. Moots observed, “Both choices of ammo performed accurately at distance and burned down the drag race stages.”

Kelly Neal finished fifth in the Tactical Division shooting Hornady® 75 grain BTHP Steel Match® in his rifle and Hornady® 9mm 125 grain HAP® Steel Match® in his pistol. Neal commented, “Between the long range stages and the cross winds, I knew both loads would be the most wind resistant and reliable and they did not let me down.”
Keith Garcia turned in a strong performance, finishing eighth in the Tactical Division. Garcia said, “I was looking for loads that would be extremely reliable and accurate so I shot Hornady 223 Superformance® 53 grain V-MAX™ for the short range rifle stages, and Hornady Superformance® 75 grain for the long range targets.” Garcia added, “In my pistol, I shot Hornady 9mm 115 grain XTP® for its quick cycling ability.”

Team HornadyŽ Scores Impressive Arizona & Nevada Wins
Team Hornady® member Kelly Neal won the 2012 Arizona Police & Fire Games 3-Gun Match, April 15, 2012, at the Tucson Rifle Club in Arizona. Enjoying his fifth win, Neal won the Overall and Optic Division shooting Hornady handloaded 55 grain Z-Max™ bullets in his rifle, and Hornady 9mm 125 grain HAP® bullets in his pistol. All five stages demanded total concentration and accuracy as many no-shoot targets were presented to the active and retired Law Enforcement and Military competitors who participated.
"I chose Z-Max™ bullets as the match was a short range affair and they're super accurate," said Neal. "I shot Hornady 125 grain HAP® (in my pistol) because they are consistently the most accurate bullet I have ever used."
Other Team Hornady® members competed at the 2012 DPMS USPSA Multi-Gun National Championship in Las Vegas, winning two national titles. Held at the Desert Sportsman Club, competitors engaged 12 stages, shooting rifle, shotgun and pistol. Match Director Carl Schmidt oversaw a course of fire for 160 competitors from 25 states, with targets ranging from two to 380 yards. Standard steel targets, a Texas star with clay pigeons, LaRue metal plates, and MGM reactive targets were used.
Katie Harris won her second High Lady National title, shooting Hornady 223 Rem 75 grain Steel Match® in her rifle. Harris added, "Hornady 75 grain Steel Match® is great ammo for close range, and delivers terrific performance from my rifle." Harris shot Hornady 124 grain round nose bullets "because, they're amazing bullets and they shoot the best out of my pistol."
Rob Romero won the Heavy Metal Limited Division, shooting Hornady 308 150 grain FMJ in his rifle for the close range targets, Hornady 155 A-MAX® for long shots, and Hornady 45 auto 230 grain FMJ RN in his pistol. "The reliability and accuracy of Hornady 230 grain delivers knock down power for plates and poppers, making this ammo a premium choice," said Romero.
Barry Dueck finished second in the Heavy Metal Tactical Division, shooting Hornady 308 Win 168 A-MAX® match ammo in his rifle, and Hornady 45 caliber 230 grain HAP® bullets in his pistol. Barry said, "I shoot Hornady because it never fails to consistently achieve top-notch accuracy."
Michael Voigt finished second in the Open Division, shooting Hornady 75 grain Match™ and 55 grain TAP® in his 223 Rem rifle, and Hornady 125 HAP® bullets in his 9mm pistol. "As always, Hornady ammo performed flawlessly and accurately," he said.

3-Gun Nation Pro Series Tour
Keith Garcia and Team Hornady® Members Storm Inaugural 3-Gun Nation Pro Series Tour
Team Hornady® members capitalized on their talent and sharp shooting skills, using Hornady® bullets and ammunition during the Inaugural 3 Gun Nation Pro Series Tour, March 31, 2012, at the Ancient City Shooting Range in St. Augustine, Florida.
The invitational showcased 64 top 3-Gun competitors and introduced them to a shooter's choice freestyle format, featuring stages that allowed shooters to decide which firearm to use, and when to begin. This unique format enabled shooters to determine their own strength and ability at every stage.
Pistol and shotgun targets were as close as seven yards, with rifle targets out to 100 yards. Rifles engaged round steel or paper targets, while shotguns shot square steel and clay pigeons. Pistols shot round and square steel and paper targets.
Keith Garcia was the overall winner, shooting Hornady® 223 Rem 53 grain Superformance® ammunition in his rifle, and Hornady® 124 grain XTP® in his 9mm pistol. "I used the 53 grain because its reduced recoil allowed me faster second shots on quick, short-range stages," said Garcia.
Adam Popplewell finished sixth, shooting Hornady® 40 cal 180 grain XTP® bullets in his pistol, and 223 Rem 75 grain Steel Match® in his rifle. "In a match like this, with few stages and fast times, any malfunctions can cost you the match," said Popplewell. "But with Hornady® ammo, it's never a concern."
Top ten finishers also included Clint Upchurch who placed seventh, and Patrick Kelly who finished eighth overall.
Match Director Rob Romero noted, "As a professional shooter, I wanted to create a one-day match format that would be both entertaining for the television audience and spectators, and exciting for the professional competitor running the stages." He said the technical component of each stage, combined with the competition's freestyle format allowed shooters to evaluate their own strengths, and make decisions accordingly.
Chad Adams, Vice President of 3Gun Nation said, "The 3-Gun Nation Pro Series represents a truly new era in 3-gun, with 64 of the country's best shooters competing heads-up, in the same division, for an entire season. This elevates the sport to an equivalent of bass fishing, and even NASCAR, where you see the very best competitors battle on the same elite stage."
Team Hornady® Scores at Bushnell Brawl with 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo
Team Hornady® sent their key precision rifle competitors to Kingsville, Texas, April 6 – 8, 2012 to participate in the Bushnell Brawl, held at the Rifle Only Training Center. A field of 95 elite precision rifle competitors representing Law Enforcement, Military, and Civilians, came together to demonstrate their accuracy, agility and abilities to work under time limits over the three-day individual event.

Twenty-four courses of fire featured targets as close as seven yards for pistol, and 600+ yards for rifle. Shooters shot from prone, seated, and other positions, to running through concrete tunnels. Marksmanship skills were further tested as competitors were airlifted by helicopter to hover 100 feet above the range, and engage targets at 45-degree angles.
Rob Ormond tied for fourth place with a score of 1700 points, shooting Hornady 140 grain A-MAX® 6.5 Creedmoor in his rifle, and Hornady® 125 grain 9mm Steel Match® in his pistol. "The 124 grain Steel Match® gives me the knock down power as well as the accuracy to engage targets for maximum points," Ormond said.
Competing with a broken ankle didn't prevent Michael Voigt from finishing strong in eighth place with a score of 1640. Voigt shot Hornady® 105 grain 6mm BTHP Match bullets in his rifle, and Hornady® 125 grain 9mm HAP® bullets in his pistol. Voigt commented, "The new AMP™ jackets, high ballistic coefficient, and legendary Hornady® accuracy make this a shooter test, as I know my ammunition is as good as it gets."
Tate Moots turned in a score of 1565 to finish in 13th place, shooting Hornady® 140 grain A-MAX® 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition in his rifle, and Hornady® 9mm 115 grain XTP® in his pistol. "Hornady® 6.5 Creedmoor is factory ammunition that performs at single digit standard deviation, which is amazing," said Moots. "There is no room for sloppy ammunition at this type of match and Hornady is always accurate and dependable."
Tony Gimmellie rounded out the team's performance in 15th place with a score of 1545, shooting Hornady® 6.5 Creedmoor 140 grain A-MAX® in his rifle, and Hornady® 9mm 124 grain in his pistol. "Hornady® 6.5 Creedmoor ammo offers me a high velocity/high ballistic coefficient round that cheats the heavy winds of South Texas," he said.
US National Steel Championships
Several Team Hornady® members competed at the 2012 US National Steel Championships, March 29 - April 1, 2012, at the Titusville Rifle and Pistol Club in Titusville, Florida. Now in its sixth year, the match drew 203 competitors for the Main match, and 87 for the Rimfire match from 24 states, Canada, Japan and Russia.

Jessie Duff |
Max Michel |
Doug Koenig |
Jessie Duff won the overall Ladies Champion, Ladies Steel Master, and the Ladies Limited, shooting Hornady® 9mm 115 grain XTP® bullets. “I couldn’t have asked for more accurate performing ammo over the course of the three day match,” said Duff.
Max Michel finished second in the .22 Rimfire match and third overall in the Main match. “I used Hornady® 115 grain XTP® bullets due to the reduced power factor needed for this event,” Michel commented, “and because they’re incredibly accurate for the 35 yard targets, or even smaller targets at 15-20 yards.”
Doug Koenig finished fourth in the Limited division, and his son Trevor won Top Overall Super Junior in the main match.
Match Director Mike Calloway observed, “I’m very proud this match continues to attract extended families and first time shooters to a national event. It speaks to the growing interest in the shooting sports. The park-like setting of the club, with gators looming nearby and some stages shaded by oak trees, makes it an ideal place to hold a match.”
The eight-stage match is designed for competitors to perform at maximum speed over three days while maintaining their stamina, and controlling the accuracy of their equipment. A unique feature of the US National Steel Championships allows competitors to arrive a few days early to practice on the range, with the same course of fire as the actual match.

Adam Popplewell |
Tate Moots |
Kelly Neal finished first in the Tactical Limited division shooting Hornady® 223 Rem 75 grain Steel Match® in his rifle and Hornady® 9mm 125 grain Steel Match® in his pistol. Neal stated, "I'm convinced the 75 grain bullets hit the LaRues and MGM targets harder than lighter bullets. When shooting Hornady ammo, I don't worry about the ammo, all misses are on me."
Keith Garcia finished third in the Tactical Scope division. Shooting both Hornady® 223 Rem 75 grain Steel Match® and 53 grain V-MAX™ in his rifle, Garcia used Hornady® 125 grain HAP® in his 9mm pistol. Garcia said, "Hornady ammo is exceptionally accurate. It flies flat, and as long as I do my job and shoot well, the ammo does the rest and that's crucial."
Adam Popplewell finished seventh in the Tactical Scope division shooting Hornady® 75 grain Steel Match® in his rifle and Hornady® 180 grain HAP® in his 40 caliber pistol. Popplewell noted, "I'm able to shoot consistently because Hornady ammo always performs great."
Tate Moots finished fourth in the Heavy Metal Scope division shooting Hornady® 308 Win 155 grain TAP® in his rifle and Hornady® 230 grain HAP® in his 45 caliber pistol. Moots said, "With all the variety of targets at the different stages, Hornady ammo performed flawlessly, it was spot on and I never had any concerns there would be a bad group."
Dan Furbee, match director, and his team designed 11 stages, incorporating the natural and diverse terrain of the Arizona desert. Furbee commented, "We try to design our stages to resemble true life tactical scenarios, so each competitor will execute the stage differently."
Over 369 competitors from 30 states competed shooting rifle, pistol, shotgun birdshot, buckshot and slugs for a minimum count of 369 rounds. With the Usery Mountain Range as a backdrop, targets were set from arms length to 340 yards encompassing standard IPSC targets, clay pigeons, poppers, Meggitt target systems and a variety of steel knock down plates.

Introducing Heavy Magnum® Turkey Shotgun Ammo
Hornady® Manufacturing, an industry leader in bullet and ammunition technology, announced its new Heavy Magnum Turkey shotgun ammunition – NOW AVAILABLE from stocking dealers and major retail sporting goods stores.
With 1½ ounces of either #4, #5 or #6 nickel plated lead shot, these 3 inch 12 gauge shotgun loads deliver true gobbler knock down power. Offering the thickest nickel-plating in the industry, shot deformation is minimized, thus reducing fliers and keeping more pellets on target for dense patterns. Packaged in 10-count boxes, these loads feature the Hornady Versatite™ wad, eliminating the need for shotgun modification or specialized turkey chokes. The Versatite wad does the patterning, and usually patterns best with an improved cylinder or modified choke.
