Match Bullets deliver at the 2010 IBS 1000 Yard Nationals

October 7, 2010

Hornady Match Bullets deliver the best Heavy Gun Groups at the 2010 IBS 1000 Yard Nationals

Team Hornady shooter Scott Fletcher relied on Hornady .338 285 grain BTHP Match bullets to bring home a first place finish in the Heavy Gun (HG) group division of the 2010 IBS 1000-Yard Nationals in September. The new .338 285 grain BTHP bullets are built with an entirely new manufacturing process that reduces jacket concentricity to previously unattainable levels. "These bullets are specifically designed and built for long range use, and the jackets are the some of best I've ever seen," said Joe Thielen, Project Engineer and avid 1000-yard bench rest competitor. "The changes we've made to our tooling, machines, and processes are really paying off."

Fletcher described the weather conditions at the match as brutal, with 20 to 30-degree temperature shifts and steady 5 to 20-mph winds, with gusts to 40 mph. "These were predominately quartering headwinds with violent switches and let-offs," he said. "I made no effort to read the wind other than to get the shots downrange as quickly as possible in a wind condition judged to be constant." His efforts were impressive, posting a Thursday group of 9.166 inches; groups of 10.594 and 8.423 inches on Friday; and 8.409 inches on Saturday, for a 4-group average of 9.148 inches.

Hornady spokesman Steve Johnson added, "Seeing our Match™ bullets perform as consistently as they do, especially in conditions as adverse as they were for Nationals, really gives testament to the fact that we are making THE BEST match bullets on the market, period."

Sponsored by Hornady Manufacturing, Team Hornady® members, Mike Voigt, Max Michel, Maggie Reese, and Nic Neel will be competing as well as noteworthy shooters like Blake Miguez, who has been featured on the History Channel's "Top Shots" and the United States Army Marksmanship Unit out of Ft Benning Georgia.

With over 225 competitors already signed up, the match is going to be exciting and impressive." Greenfield adds, "Heartland Public Shooting Park is a great venue because it is so spectator-friendly. It is easy for folks to walk up and see exactly how big the whole match is and get around to each individual stage for a closer look."

The match is open to the public and spectators are encouraged to attend. The USPSA Area 3 competition is a large match that draws shooters from all over the world and offers a great opportunity for anyone to come out and see world renowned shooters quickly and safely negotiate 14 stages and fire 83,475+ rounds between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon.

"Watching professional athletes shoot is an experience that will leave most people, even those without a background in competitive shooting, in awe," comments Hornady Manufacturing spokesman Steve Johnson. "Action pistol shooting is far different from the shooting disciplines that we're used to seeing here locally, like trap, skeet or sporting clays. There is a lot more shooter movement and some very complicated stages - it will not let the spectator down."

Team Hornady delivers a solid performance at the Missouri State 1000 yard IBS Championship

July 2, 2010

Team Hornady members, Joe Thielen and Randy Stephens took top honors at the 2010 Missouri State 1000 yard bench rest championships in Yukon, MO on June 26, 2010. Competing in a field of over 30 competitors, Joe, also an Engineer at Hornady Manufacturing, took 1st place in Light Gun group and another 1st in Light Gun overall. Randy took 1st place in the Heavy Gun score category as well as Heavy Gun overall.

5.050" / 99-4X

7.382" / 95-3X

The course of fire that entailed two, five shot targets with the light guns (17 lbs or less) and two, ten shot groups with the heavy guns (unlimited class). Each target was measured for group size and counted for score. Weather conditions were less than ideal, with 90-95 degree temperatures, high humidity, and an unpredictable fishtailing wind that made shooting very difficult.

Randy was shooting Hornady 30 caliber 208 gr A-MAX bullets in his heavy gun, which is chambered in 300 WSM. Both of his Heavy Gun targets were impressive with regard to both group and score. His first target was a 5.050" / 99-4X and he followed that up with a 7.382" / 95-3X, giving him a group average of 6.216 inches. Considering the 10 ring is only 7” in diameter, dropping only 6 points is very impressive.

4.005" / 47

3.779" / 45

Joe ThielenJoe was shooting Hornady 7mm 162 gr. A-MAX bullets in a 280 Remington Improved cartridge. The Light Gun targets measured an impressive 4.005" / 47 followed by a 3.779" / 45 (both pictured below). The group average was an amazing 3.892”. The fact that these groups are shot at well over half of a mile makes it almost unbelievable.

Joe had this to say after the match, "Shooting 1000 yard bench rest is my passion. Being able to use the bullets that I help design and build to shoot groups like these at 1000 yards leaves no doubt in my mind that we are on the cutting edge of match bullet technology, and we’re not done yet."

Team Hornady shooter wins 2010 Iowa State 1000 yard IBS Championship

June 24, 2010

Hornady is pleased to announce that Team Hornady member, and long time employee, John Potratz won the 2010 Iowa State 1000 yard bench rest championship held in Pella, Iowa on June 19, 2010.  Competing in a field of over 20 competitors and a course of fire that entailed two, five shot targets with the light guns (17 lbs or less) and two, ten shot groups with the heavy guns (unlimited class). Each target was measured for group size and counted for score.  Near perfect weather conditions helped, but John delivered small groups with high scores to win the 2 gun overall championship.

John was shooting Hornady 30 caliber 208 gr A-MAX bullets in his heavy gun, chambered in 30-375 Ruger,  and Hornady 7mm 162 gr. A-MAX bullets in a 280 Remington Improved cartridge. The Light Gun targets measured an impressive 4.915” / 47 (pictured below) followed by a 6.374” / 45. John’s first Heavy Gun target measured 8.225” / 93 and was followed up with a 7.119” / 95. (pictured below). Keep in mind, these groups were shot at well over half a mile.  These small, consistent, & well placed groups put John at the top of a very competitive cadre of shooters.  John said, “Over the past couple years we’ve put a lot of work into our match bullets, being able to use the bullets that we make to win a competition like this is a great feeling.”

Team Hornady professional shooters are off to a dominating start in 2010

June 4, 2010

Team Hornady pro shooters have been dominating the firing line. Most notably are two first place finishes at the prestigious 2010 NRA Bianchi Cup National Action Pistol Championship, May 26-29, at the Green Valley Rifle and Pistol Club near Columbia, Missouri.

Team Hornady members, Doug Koenig and Jessie Abbate, posted first place finishes at the Bianchi Cup. This was Doug’s 12th win and Jessie's first. After winning the match with a perfect score of 1920-179x in the Open Division, Doug competed in the optional Speed Event, that he also won. Doug and Jessie were both shooting Hornady® 115 gr XTP bullets from their Smith & Wesson 38 Super’s. "For Bianchi, accuracy is it, and that is the reason I use Hornady bullets," said Doug.

Max MichelTeam Hornady shooter Max Michel was heavily favored to win the USPSA Area 4 Championship, May 19-24, at the Shootout Range in Bossier City, Louisiana, and he did not disappoint. Shooting Hornady 124 XTP in his 38 Super, Max was one of a very small group to put all hits on the target. "Once again, my 124 gr XTP bullets proved to be accurate and consistent," he said. "This time they were tested not only up-close, but also out to 50 yards on a very difficult pistol course. There just isn’t a better bullet."

Team HornadyFellow Team Hornady member, 17-year old Grand Master, Nic Neel finished third overall at the Area 4 match. Nic shot handloaded 125 gr Hornady HAP bullets in his Infinity IMM. Shooting 97.40% of Max's event winning score, Nic is expected to make a major impact on the shooting scene in the years to come.

Team Hornady shooter Tony Gimmellie used Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr Match ammo to win the Oregon Sniper Challenge, May 22-23, at the Douglas Ridge Rifle Club in Eagle Creek Oregon. Tony said, "Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor ammo delivered ½ MOA accuracy from the POF gas piston rifle, allowing me to stay well ahead of the competition." The 6.5 Creedmoor is quickly becoming a dominating force in both precision and tactical events.

muddyThe FNH Midwest 3 Gun Championships, May 21-23, at the Fire For Effect Range in Fayette, Missouri can be summed up in one word; muddy. That didn’t stop Team Hornady member Barry Dueck from winning the Tactical Optics Heavy division. Barry shot Hornady TAP FPD 110 gr 308 Winchester and 9mm XTP bullets from his STI. "The 308 110 gr TAP FPD is an extremely accurate round with low recoil, which makes it easy to get through stages quickly and precisely," he said.

Michel Takes Area 6 Championship Open Division Title for Seventh Time

April 22, 2010

Team Hornady member Max Michel competed at the 2010 USPSA Area 6 Championship this past weekend, winning the Open Division, which was comprised of 105 shooters. The 12 stage match has a solid reputation for luring world class professional competitors and was held at the South River Gun Club in Covington, GA.

Max said, "Every stage was designed with so many technicalities from shooting at paper, steel, and swingers to International targets that I shot Hornady 124 grain XTP. It's the best all around bullet for the Open Division and with the XTP bullet; I knew it would provide the accuracy I required for some of the partially obstructed targets. I really enjoyed the pressure of shooting alongside of my peers at this match, the competition was intense."

Fellow Team Hornady member Nic Neel, made his debut competing in the Area 6 Match, taking High Junior in the Open Division. Nic said, "I used Hornady 121 grain HAP bullets for this match because the extra amount of precision provided by the quality of the bullet was helpful. Stage 9 was my favorite; it was an eight round speed shoot with two fast swingers and a disappearing drop out target activated by two large poppers."

Max Michel Grabs 5th Win at the Double Tap Championship in Wichita Falls

March 11, 2010

Team Hornady member Max Michel defied Mother Nature and her bag of distractions to win the Open Division at the second largest IPSC/USPSA three day match in the United States. With a field of over 290 shooters, Max's focused and competitive nature overcame the adverse weather conditions that shooters had to contend with. Temperatures in the high 20's, 25 mph winds and snow made for cold, muddy stages in the Lone Star State.

"The Flintstones" was the theme for this year’s match providing competitors with cleverly designed stages named after familiar cartoon props allowing competitors to test their defensive skills. Whether it was the Stone Bowling stage, Rock Quarry or the Brontosaurus Rib, Michel executed all of them with his usual fast paced approach using Hornady bullets.

Max said, "When I'm competing and engaging targets that are from point blank to 50 yards, I use the Hornady 124 grain XTP in my 38 Super Comp. It's very consistent and very accurate."

Keep an eye out for more news from Max next week as he will be competing at the US Steel Nationals this weekend in Titusville, Florida.

Kelly Neal Wins 2010 Texas State Carbine Championship

March 9, 2010

Team Hornady member Kelly Neal won the Open Division and took High Overall amongst 140 other competitors. The one day event, hosted by the Starry Shooting Range in Corpus Christi, Texas designed a seven stage match using standard and 1/3 scale IPPA paper targets, steel knock down flashers and moving targets to put the shooters to the test.

After the match, Kelly said, "Vickers Scoring method was used which rewards accuracy, so I shot Hornady 55 grain V-MAX for the short range courses and Hornady 75 grain BTHP’s for the long range targets; they carry more energy to activate the reactive steel targets. I'm very proud to be a member of Team Hornady, using Hornady, I'm guaranteed the ammo will always be consistent and accurate and Hornady has terrific progressive re-loading equipment."

Steve Johnson, Hornady Marketing Communications Manager said, "Kelly's a new member to Team Hornady and we are glad to have him on board. This is a great start for the 2010 season and we look forward to more to come."

Max Michel Wins 2010 Florida Open Pistol Tournament

March 5, 2010

Team Hornady member Max Michel found himself on familiar ground when he won the Open Division of the 2010 Florida Open Pistol Tournament. The event is to the competitive shooting world what the Daytona 500 is to NASCAR. The tournament was hosted by The Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida which specializes in military, law enforcement and competitive firearm training.

The ten stages, designed for high round count provided Max with the perfect venue to test his winning shooting skills and strategy. Max commented, "Winning this event for the third consecutive year is just as exciting as it was the first time. The match was designed using International targets, which are not only shaped differently, but they're 30% smaller than US targets. I used Hornady 124 grain XTP in my 38 Super Comp and it performed flawlessly. Knowing every Hornady bullet is consistent allows me to run the stages with complete confidence so my concentration is not broken."

Hornady Releases Superformance 308 Win Match Cartridge

March 3, 2010

Hornady unveils the next generation of match ammunition - the Superformance 308 Win 178 gr BTHP Match. Achieving 2,775 feet per second from a SAAMI spec 24” test barrel, this new load is approximately 175 fps FASTER than any comparable commercial load available today! Topped with the NEW 178 gr BTHP Match bullet featuring a .530 ballistic coefficient, this Superformance™ offering provides industry leading ballistic performance.

"The new 178 grain BTHP Match bullet was purpose built, and optimized specifically for the 308 Winchester chamber. It features an aggressive ogive as well as an extremely efficient boat tail that makes this projectile highly effective aerodynamically, yield less wind drift and allows the shooter to obtain flatter trajectories. Accuracy results were excellent. We shot a .680" group at 200 yards with our test equipment, and field tests out to 1250 yards yielded 8 inch, not 8 MOA, but 8 inch total circumferential groups." – Joe Thielen – Hornady Project Engineer

Remaining supersonic to approximately 1,275 yards, this new load provides a 200 to 250 yard advantage over anything else currently available in 308 Winchester. Because Hornady incorporates its Superformance technology, there is no increase in pressure, barrel wear or felt recoil. It also offers incredible temperature stability and excellent accuracy potential.

"When we combine this high B.C. match bullet with our Superformance propellants, the result is a completely new load specifically designed to maximize every aspect of the 308 Winchester." – Dave Emary – Hornady Senior Ballistician
